AT & amp; T Mobility LLC , also known as AT & amp; T Wireless marketed as just AT & amp; T , is a wholly owned subsidiary of AT & amp; T which provides wireless services to 138.8 million subscribers in the United States including Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. AT & amp; T Mobility is the second largest wireless telecommunications provider in the United States and Puerto Rico behind Verizon Wireless and the largest wireless telecommunications provider in North America when including AT & T Mexico.

Originally known as Cingular Wireless from 2000 to 2007, a joint venture between SBC Communications and BellSouth, the company acquired AT & amp; T Wireless in 2004; SBC then acquires AT & amp; T original. Cingular becomes wholly owned by AT & amp; T in December 2006 as a result of the acquisition of AT & amp; T's BellSouth.

In January 2007, Cingular insisted it would re-brand itself under the name of AT & T. Although legitimate corporate name changes took place immediately, both for regulatory and brand awareness reasons, both brands were used in sign and company advertising during the transition period. The transition ended in late June, just before the launch of Apple's iPhone.

On March 20, 2011, AT & amp; T Mobility announced its intention to acquire T-Mobile USA from Deutsche Telekom for $ 39 billion. If it has received government and regulatory approval, AT & T will have more than 130 million subscribers. However, the US Department of Justice, Federal Communications Commission, and AT & amp; T Mobility (like Sprint Corporation) opposes the move on the grounds that it will substantially reduce competition in the mobile network market. In December 2011, in the face of both government and broad consumer opposition, AT & amp; T withdrew his offer to complete the merger.

History

Cingular Wireless

Cingular Wireless was established in 2000 as a joint venture of SBC Communications and BellSouth. The joint venture creates the second largest airline in the country. Cingular grew out of a conglomeration of more than 100 companies, with 12 regional companies renowned for Bell roots. The 12 companies include:

  • Three companies are separated from Advanced Mobile Phone Service
    • Ameritech Mobile Communications
    • BellSouth Mobility
    • Southwestern Bell Mobile Systems
  • BellSouth Mobility DCS
  • BellSouth Wireless Data
  • CCPR Services d/b/a Cellular One Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands
  • Pacific Bell Wireless
  • Pacific Bell Wireless Northwest
  • SBC Wireless
  • SNET Mobility
  • Southwestern Bell Wireless

SBC Wireless has previously operated in several markets northeast of the "Cellular One" brand, while BellSouth wireless operations incorporate former Houston Cellular.

The Cingular lineage can be traced back to the Advanced Mobile Phone Service, which is a subsidiary of AT & T created in 1978 to provide national cellular services. AMPS is divided between Regional Bell Operating Companies as part of the Bell System divestment.

With the exception of Pacific Bell and BellSouth Mobility DCS, the digital network consists of D-AMPS technology. The Pacific Bell and BellSouth Mobility DCS networks use GSM technology in the PCS frequency band (1900 MHz).

In October 2007, the president and CEO of AT & amp; T, Stan Sigman announced his resignation. Ralph de la Vega, group president-Regional Telecom & amp; Entertainment, named as president and CEO, AT & amp; T Mobility.

AT & amp; T Wireless merge

In February 2004, after a bidding war with Vodafone Plc of Britain (at the time as Verizon Wireless owner) Cingular announced that it would buy a struggling competitor, AT & T Wireless Service, for $ 41 billion. This is more than twice the value of a company's trade.

The merger was completed on October 26, 2004. The combined company had a customer base of 46 million people at the time, making Cingular the largest wireless provider in the United States. AT & amp; T Wireless was then legally renamed to New Cingular Wireless Service . Shortly thereafter, the new ad indicated with "AT & amp; T" turned into Cingular logo, and with Cingular logo text turning blue to recognize the change. Some companies consisting of Cingular, such as BellSouth Mobility, no longer exist when they are legally merged into an operating subsidiary AT & amp; T Wireless PCS , the New Cingular Wireless PCS .

First announced on June 22, 2005, Cingular Wireless announced its intention to divest Caribbean and Bermuda operations and licenses it acquired from AT & amp; T Wireless, to Digicel Group owned by Ireland and Jamaica based on discretionary financial requirements.

In 2006, a year after the deal, a high-profile source who allegedly approached the sale pointed the Barbados Daily Nation newspaper against several SEC archives made by Cingular that it was said to build an idea of the estimated selling price of the deal. According to the SEC archive, Cingular is paid about $ 122 million, with most of it being used for the purchase of AT & amp; T previously in Barbados by Digicel.

At the time of the merger, there are two networks: AT & amp; T Blue and Cingular Orange historic networks. Both networks contain a mix of TDMA and GSM facilities. Approximately 50,000 cell sites should be put together. From a technical point of view, the "blue" and "orange" networks are considered different networks until integration is completed in 2005. Enhanced Network Selection (ENS) is used for home mobile devices on the "blue" or "orange" networks during this process.

new (in February 2009 "new" deleted). Cingular used store, after renamed AT & amp; T, sells all AT & amp ;: wireless products, home phones, Internet, U-Verse, and more.

The name change will be parodied on an episode of The Colbert Report when Stephen Colbert will compare business name changes to AT & amp; T to T-1000 from the Terminator movie, as much of what is now AT & amp; T is the majority of the former Bell System.

Cingular to AT & amp; T rebranding transition
  • On January 14, 2007, AT & amp; T launched the transition from the Cingular brand to AT & amp; T in television advertising and customer communication, by creating "Cingular now The New AT & amp; T" logo.
  • On April 15, 2007, AT & amp; T Mobility began introducing mobile phones and AT & amp; The alpha tag (the screen of the phone displaying the name of the network on which the phone is connected) on the new phone activation also starts reading "AT & amp; T".
  • Around May 11, 2007, the name Cingular was replaced by "AT & amp; T" in most ads.
  • On May 19, 2007, the AT & amp; T replaces the Cingular logo on the NEXCEL Cup Series supported car, owned by Richard Childress Racing and driven by Jeff Burton; however, it was immediately removed.
  • On May 24, 2007, Palm, Inc. issued an update for the Cingular-branded Treo 680 smartphone which, inter alia, updated the mobile branding (startup and shutdown screen, background wallpaper) from Cingular to AT & amp; T.
  • On May 31, 2007, the previous cingular.com website redirected to wireless.att.com and no longer displays any Cingular logo.
  • In June 2007, the customer service phone line began to be answered "Thanks for contacting The New AT & amp; T, about your wireless service." In addition, all new SIM cards are branded with the AT & amp; T.
  • As of June 16, 2007, most phones on the corporate network show AT & T as carriers rather than Cingular.
  • In early 2009, AT & amp; T has removed the "The New" part of its brand from all advertising and communications. The customer service phone line answered "Thanks for calling AT & T."
  • As of December 2017, www.cingular.com can still be used to access AT & amp; Q. Although AT & amp; T let the Cingular federal trademark end in June 2013, they still have a trademark for Cingular Sounds. The CingularSounds.com domain also rolls over to AT & amp; On May 16, 2014, the Cingular Sounds brand was canceled by the USPTO when AT & amp; T does not file a declaration of the use of Article 8.
  • As of January 2016, as part of a corporate rebranding unrelated to AT & amp; T against DirecTV, AT & amp; T Mobility begins to remove the orange usage of advertisements, which is Cingular's dominant color. The company started to put more emphasis on the blue color, which has been saved as an accent color after the initial merger with AT & T Wireless and is a legacy color with DirecTV and Bell System.

Acquisition of Dobson Communications

On November 15, 2007, AT & T completed the acquisition of Dobson Communications. Dobson markets the Mobile One brand in rural and suburban locations across the United States, including Alaska. AT & amp; T bought Dobson for $ 13 per share, as well as assuming a regional operator debt, which weighs the operator about $ 5.1 billion total. The US Department of Justice has ordered AT & amp; T to sell assets in five US states to complete the takeover of Dobson Communications Corp. worth $ 2.8 billion. The Department instructs AT & amp; T to release certain cell phone assets in Kentucky, Oklahoma, Missouri, Pennsylvania, and Texas where AT & amp; T and Dobson are most competitive. At that time, AT & amp; T is the largest mobile provider in the US, with over 81 million customers in 50 states. Dobson's Cellular One is the ninth largest, with 1.7 million subscribers in 17 states. AT & T said the deal is expected to expire in 12 months and is subject to regulatory approval. As of June 2011, it is being reviewed by the FCC. On August 31, 2011, the US Department of Justice officially announced that it had filed a lawsuit to block the merger. On November 22, 2011, the FCC Chairman, Julius Genachowski, recommended T-Mobile's proposed acquisition of AT & T proposed to administrative legal judges for review and trial. On November 23rd, 2011, AT & amp; T revoked its submission with the FCC regarding the acquisition of T-Mobile USA. They also point out that they will recognize the $ 4 Billion accounting cost in terms of collapse deal. Network

GSM facility

In California, Nevada, New Jersey North and New York City, Cingular and T-Mobile USA maintain and share the GSM-1900 network prior to the acquisition of AT & T Wireless, through a joint venture known as GSM Facilities . The network sharing agreement allows Cingular to offer local services in northern New Jersey and New York City and T-Mobile USA to offer services in California and Nevada. On May 25, 2004, Cingular and T-Mobile USA announced their intention to dissolve the agreement depending on the successful acquisition of Cingular AT & T Wireless, the Cingular network was transferred to T-Mobile USA, with Cingular continuing work on GSM facilities at AT & amp; T Wireless.

Fiber network switching facilities

AT & amp; T has a global Tier-1 fiber network switching facility under the sea at St. Croix in the US Virgin Islands, along with the University of the Virgin Islands Research and Technology Park.

Radio frequency summary

Here is a list of known frequencies that AT & amp; T employ in the United States. 2G Frequency stopped on January 1, 2017.

Network Reach

As a result of its formation through mergers and acquisitions, as well as rapid technological changes in the wireless industry, AT & T operates the second largest voice and data digital network in the footsteps of the United States. The core technology standards for AT & amp; T Mobility is called Global System for Mobile Communications, or GSM. Most AT & AT network treads now use 3GPP UMTS/HSPA Standard 2 (UMTS/HSPA) 3GPP wireless technology for circuit switched voice and packet switched communications simultaneously. AT & amp; T also offers Enhanced Push To Talk (PTT) service on smart phones. The original PTT service is sunset.

Cingular, the precursor to AT & amp; T, supports both old D-AMPS/TDMA and analog wireless networks. In March 2006, Cingular announced that this network will close in February 2008. On March 31, 2007, Cingular terminated TDMA supported for GoPhone customers (pre-paid). On February 18, 2008, AT & amp; T Mobility officially terminates service on their AMPS and TDMA networks, except in areas previously operated by Dobson Communications; Dobson AMPS and TDMA networks were closed on March 1, 2008.

Networks previously operated by AT & P's predecessors including Cingular also include a wide range of Cingular's paging and divisional Interactive services, which are Velocita Wireless. Velocita is then purchased by Sprint Nextel.

AT & T wireless data network began in 2002 as a Cingular initiative called "Project Events" which involves overlaying GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) from all wireless networks. Project Genesis was completed in late 2004. Then, this network was upgraded to EDGE (Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution) across GSM traces.

In 2005, AT & T launched a broadband network known as "BroadbandConnect", based on UMTS and Downlink High Speed Access Package (HSDPA), to counter Verizon Wireless and EV-DO Sprint network. The UMTS service was launched on December 6, 2005 in Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Salt Lake City, San Jose, San Diego, Las Vegas, Phoenix, Puerto Rico, Austin, Houston, Dallas, Detroit, Chicago, Boston, Baltimore and Washington. DC and extended to all major metropolitan markets by the end of 2006. Starting early 2009, AT & amp; T Mobility has completed the 3G upgrade to HSUPA, and will initiate a new round of upgrades to the HSPA standard.

In 2010, AT & T completed the migration of Legacy Bell South Wireless customers to the southeast to their national billing system.

At the end of 2010, AT & T shut down their legacy Blue (Legacy AT & T) and Red (Legacy Dobsion Cellular One) networks. Customers are forced to migrate to the Orange Network (Cingular Inheritance) AT & amp; T current or cancellation.

2G Shutdown

AT & amp; T shut down the GSM 2G network (850/1900 MHz) on January 1, 2017 after announcing its intention to do so four years earlier.

AT & amp; T Requires at least national 3G support for all devices on the network.

  • 3G networks WCDMA/UMTS/HSDPA/HSPA - 850/1900Ã, MHz (Band 2 & amp; 5)
  • 4G LTE Networks - 700/850/1900/1700/2100/2300Ã, MHz (Bands 2, 4, 5, 12, 14, 17, 29, 30, 40, 66)

Future networks

AT & amp; T, like most other mobile phone companies, has chosen to build a 4G network with Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology. LTE is the next step of 3G/WCDMA and HSPA for many already on the GSM technology curve, including AT & T. The new radio access technology will be optimized to deliver data rates of up to 100 Mbit/s downlink and 50 Mbit/s uplink (peak rates). Network Management Practice AT & amp; T ensures that all customers will be able to use LTE efficiently. Speed is expected to be around 6 Mbit/s up to 8 Mbit/s with a peak rate of about 20 Mbit/s at launch.

AT & amp; T is upgraded to HSPA 14.4 as part of their efforts to upgrade their 3G wireless network as well as transition to LTE. AT & T stated that their increase was completed by the end of 2010 after completing the backhaul connections leading from the cell site to the AT & amp; In addition, AT & amp; T has completed most of their LTE network and continues to upgrade it with HD Voice and repurposed bands from 2G closed.

AT & T is currently testing the implementation of 5G wireless services with a view to implementing it at the end of 2018 while continuing to expand the 5G Evolution technology to improve existing LTE networks.

Marketing

"Dropped call at the latest"

During the first quarter of 2006, Telephia reported that during extensive national tests of major wireless carriers in 350 metropolitan markets across the country, Cingular dropped the fewest calls across the country. In turn, Cingular began to aggressively advertise "Allover Network", citing Telephia as "a leading independent research firm." The Telephia report contrasts with the publication of Consumers Union, Consumer Reports, based on a survey of 50,000 members in 18 cities, who criticized Cingular for static and disconnected calls. Furthermore, J.D. Power and Associates consistently assigns Cingular ratings at or near the bottom of each geographic area in the 2006 Wireless Snap Quality Study, which is based on a survey of less than 23,000 wireless users. This campaign must end unexpectedly.

Telephia, which tests wireless networks by making more than 6 million calls per year in what it claims to be the world's largest wireless test program, initially refused to provide details about his research, and a company spokesman said according to Boston Globe , that "Cingular should not mention the company name to the reporter." The research firm later stated that Cingular did have "statistically significant drop call rates compared to competition in some market groups/time periods," but Telephia "lacked knowledge of the specific methodology (market, time period or statistical threshold) Cingular used for the 'disconnected call' claim. "While AT & amp; T has abandoned his verbal claims about the "Little Slip Call" in his ad, he continues to point to a situation where two people talk to each other on their phone, and one of the user calls falls. AT & amp; T now states "We are still running ads that emphasize the importance of not dropping calls." The campaign continues. "

Apple iPhone

On June 29, 2007, Apple iPhone was introduced to the US market, and made AT & T the exclusive carrier for devices in the United States until February 10, 2011, when iPhone 4 was launched on the Verizon network.

Growing problems with the AT & T billing process came soon after the iPhone release, as initial users began receiving very detailed monthly phone bills with one of the most prominent of which was the 300 page page bill shown in online video by blogger Justine Ezarik.

Apple launches iPhone 3G with AT & amp; T on July 11, 2008. Although a certain AT & T sales number is not available, Apple announced that more than 1 million iPhone 3G devices sold during the first three days - on the contrary, according to Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple, "It took 74 days to sell one million the first original iPhone. " In August 2008, Best Buy announced that it would start selling the iPhone 3G for use on the AT & T network. In September 2008, AT & T announced that it would also sell iPhone 3G in Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands.

In the United States, iPhone 3G is available for purchase with or without an AT & amp; T, since most large box retailers, like Best Buy, will sell devices without a contract. AT & amp; T is rumored to have subsidized the iPhone's price to reach a wider consumer spectrum.

On December 27, 2009, reports began to appear that AT & T has stopped selling iPhone online. Spokesman Fletcher Cook said the telephone company periodically "modified" its distribution channel, but did not comment further on the suspension of sales in the New York City area. One AT & T employee did not correctly state that, "New York is not ready for the iPhone yet," and that it does not have enough cell towers to meet the heavy data demands charged on the network by iPhone users. Popular iPhone sales resumed December 30, 2009. The incident has rekindled speculation that AT & AT's wireless network does not match the demands of today's generation of 3G smartphones. Official AT & amp; T is that a large number of fraudulent activities lead to withdrawal of sales in the area.

The iPhone 4 was released on June 24, 2010. It brings a host of new features, such as enhanced cameras, flash, new exterior designs, enhanced screens, and new versions of Apple software. According to Apple, more than 1.7 million iPhone 4 units sold in the first few days, which is the most out of all phones ever sold. This sale drives AT & amp; T to strong Q2 results.

Android-based smartphones

On February 18, 2010, AT & T announced that on March 7, 2010 will introduce the first smart phone based on Google's Android operating system, Backflip Motorola. On March 22, 2010, AT & T announced that both Android handsets are Dell Aero, a revised version of the Dell Mini 3. However, the second Android phone AT & amp; T released is the HTC Aria announced on June 14, 2010 and released on June 20, 2010. Samsung Captivate, which is part of the Galaxy S family, was released on AT & amp; T on July 18, 2010. In addition to devices released on AT & amp; T is a line of handsets manufactured by Motorola. Motorola Flipout, followed by Motorola Flipside and Motorola Bravo are all running Android 2.1 and all released Q4 2010. Three new Android 4G devices are announced for release in the first and second quarters of fiscal 2011, including Motorola Atrix 4G, HTC Inspire 4G, and Samsung Infuse 4G. HTC Inspire 4G became the first, preceded by Motorola Atrix 4G, available through 4G network AT & amp; T. All three of these devices all run Android 2.2 (Froyo) and are expected to be upgraded to Android 2.3 Gingerbread by the end of the year, along with updates to "enable" 4G uploads. Unlike other United States networks with Android-based phones, AT & T does not allow non-market applications to be installed. However, on May 16, 2011, AT & T announced that some current and upcoming Android devices will come with the option to allow unofficial app install.

4G LTE

In the BBDO campaign for 4G and 4G LTE starting in November 2012, Beck Bennett interviewed children in an ad directed by Jorma Taccone, with the slogan "It's not complicated." Children are asked whether sooner or later is better, or whether two are better than one. Taccone says, "The spots are 'guided' improvisation, which means that children are allowed to be natural until others have to come in and help.

Controversy

Contribution sponsor NASCAR Cingular/AT & amp; T

Cingular Wireless began sponsoring # 31 Chevrolet, owned by Richard Childress Racing, in the NASCAR Winston Cup Series in 2002. Two years later, when Nextel Communications (now Sprint Corporation) purchased naming rights for the NASCAR top division (renaming divisions like the Nextel Cup , and then the Sprint Cup), Cingular and Alltel, sponsor # 12 Dodge (owned by Penske Racing and driven by Ryan Newman), allowed to remain a sponsor under the grandfather clause. In early 2007, after purchase by AT & amp; T, Cingular started a re-branding effort to the AT & amp; T Mobility. NASCAR quickly claimed that a clause in their contract with Sprint Nextel would not allow Cingular to change the name or brand advertised on car # 31.

After trying and failing to persuade NASCAR to approve the addition of the world logo AT & amp; T to the rear of the car, AT & amp; T filed a lawsuit against NASCAR on March 16, 2007. On May 18, AT & amp; T won the preliminary injunction in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Georgia in Atlanta and, following an emergency move that failed to stay at NASCAR on May 19, re-branded the # 31 car, driven by Jeff Burton, in time for Nextel All- that. NASCAR was then appealed to be heard on 2 August.

On June 17, NASCAR announced it had filed a $ 100 million lawsuit for AT & amp; T and wanted AT & T and all other telecommunications companies out of the sport in 2008.

On August 13, a decision by the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit cleared the way for NASCAR to prevent AT & T from displaying its logo on the car. 11 Circuit dismissed a lower court ruling that prevented NASCAR from halting AT & amp; Q. The appellate court returned the case to the district court.

In the first practice for the Sharpie 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway on August 24, # 31 cars were orange and black, but naked; ie, associate sponsors appear, but no major sponsorship in cars, similar to Formula One cars run in races where tobacco advertising is banned. The pit crew wore a shirt Richard Childress Racing and Burton had a plain orange fire suit with an associate sponsor. The car, which carries the "covert advertising" scheme, arrives on a black hauler with only number 31 on the side. NASCAR officials say the car will not pass the inspection with the AT & amp; Over the weekend, AT & amp; T claims that two alternative paint schemes put forward by AT & amp; T - advertises "phone" and the other with the older Cingular slogan "more bars in more places" recently brought back - rejected by NASCAR. Go Phone scheme has been used in the past. NASCAR then rejects this claim.

The car remained naked on the night of the race on August 25, although ESPN aired the AT & amp; T during shooting from the camera in his car. Fox Sports has done it earlier in disagreement, with the words "Cingular is the new AT & amp; T" on the screen during this shoot.

On September 7, 2007, a settlement was reached where AT & amp; T Mobility can remain at # 31 cars until the end of 2008, but the associate sponsor of # 29 Holiday Inn Chevrolet Nationwide Series is not affected, as they are in the lower series..

Richard Childress Racing announces AT & amp; T Mobility will move to Grand American Road Racing Association sports car racing in 2009 with sponsorship from Childress-Howard Motorsports # 4 AT & amp; T Pontiac Daytona Prototype sportscar. Childress is the owner of this team.

Network Management Policy

In 2012, AT & T is under surveillance to reduce the speed of data sent to consumers with unlimited data packets. The company has claimed that, despite claims of network speed, it is in its legal right to reduce the speed of data to consumers that reach a predefined threshold. In May 2012, Matt Spaccarelli, a truck driver, won a small claims claim against the company for slowing down his services. A Simi Valley, California judge gave Spaccarelli $ 850, agreeing that "unlimited" services should not experience a slowdown. Additionally, AT & T user agreements do not allow class-action lawsuits against companies.

Mobility Administration Fee

In May 2013, AT & amp; T adds a cost of 61 cents per month per line to all of its wireless postpaid channels, including channels that are still in service contracts. The fee appears "below the line" making it look like a tax at the bottom of the customer's phone bill. This cost is estimated to bring in more than half a billion dollars a year for AT & amp; T, which claims the cost is to cover cell site costs and maintenance.
