Debt, AIDS, Trade, Africa ( DATA ) is a multinational non-governmental organization founded in January 2002 in London by U2 Bono together with Bobby Shriver and activists from Jubilee 2000 Drop Debt campaigns.
DATA was created for the purpose of securing equity and justice for Africa through debt relief, adjusting trade rules that burden Africa, eliminating the AIDS epidemic in Africa, strengthening democracy, advancing accountability by rich countries and African leaders, and transparency of the people. In 2007, in the United States, DATA and Bono were jointly awarded the 2007 Liberty Medal from the National Constitution Center for their efforts to overcome the AIDS crisis and extreme poverty in Africa.
The initial funding comes from Bill & amp; Melinda Gates Foundation, financier George Soros, and technology entrepreneur Edward W. Scott.
In 2007, DATA and ONE Campaign decided to join, and, in January 2008, they officially joined the name ONE.
DATA received support from rock Christian/alternative rock band Switchfoot and Day Three.
