Background and personality
Born May 10, 1916, Lane was raised by a hard, rough father, a middle-class salesman. In adulthood, Lane served in World War II as a supply assistant at Rosyth, and married a woman named Rebecca, with whom she had a son named Nigel. He also worked for advertising agencies Putnam Powell and Lowe, where he was given the task of handling mergers and takeovers.
Lane is pictured stuck between two worlds: he enjoys his new life in the United States, but has difficulty adapting to his customs in the adopted country. He often looks stiff and reserved but sometimes lets his hair fall, usually after a drink. He was not particularly interested in football, although he managed to use the streets to the pub for the 1966 World Cup Final to create a potential account with Jaguar.
Sterling Cooper
PPL sent Lane to Sterling Cooper, which recently acquired the company, which commissioned it to cut operating costs. He started by firing many employees, including longtime Burt Peterson, who was head of the account, and named Pete Campbell and Ken Cosgrove as joint successors. Lane Angers Don and became isolated from the company when he revealed the lack of interest in PPL in a potentially profitable account with Madison Square Garden. Although at first he did not know the PPL plan for Sterling Cooper, he later learned that he had been ordered to cut overhead costs so the company could be sold for profit. Lane's superiors in PPL then transferred him to India - a canceled plan after a potential replacement for an injury in a strange accident. Roger Sterling, Bertram Cooper, and Don Draper convince him to join them in starting a new agency, making him a named partner in exchange for "shooting" the three of them to cancel their contract, which contains a non-competing clause that would otherwise have banned their work which is sustainable in advertising.
Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce
It soon became clear that Lane had the ability to manage corporate earnings and control costs, talents that other partners did not have, needed in new companies. Lane, along with Joan, is credited with keeping the company running and managing its day-to-day operations.
In Season 4, Lane's marriage is a mess, as Rebecca, who really loves her, finds homesickness and homesick tension too heavy to bear, and returns with their son to London indefinitely. Lane and Don finally meet at work, then get drunk and go out at night in town. Lane sleeps with a prostitute provided by Don. Lane pays Don for his service the next morning, and thanks him for this "welcome disruption." When the Lane family was supposed to come to New York to meet him, he was visited by his elderly father, who intended to take Lane home to England to finish his business. Around the same time, Lane started a relationship with a young African-American Playboy Bunny named Toni, and later introduced it to his father. His father hit Lane with his cane, ordering him to return to London to reunite with his family. Lane takes a short leave from the agent, and then returns to New York with his family.
In Season 5, Lane faces severe financial problems and struggles to keep his balance in the workplace. For three years at Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce, he has been operating in defeat and struggling to change his agency. He became interested in Joan Harris, who gently denied his progress. They then develop friendships, often cheering each other during times of stress.
Death
To cover the huge tax bills in Britain, when he monetized the investment to cover his partnership fee, Lane embezzled $ 7,500 from the company by forging Don's signature on the Christmas bonus payment he was expected to receive. However, he feels uneasy when the partners announce that they will cancel their bonus for that year. Bert Cooper discovers a canceled check when looking through an unopened account report. Bert confronts Don about approving a bonus payment for Lane when the company decides not to pay the bonus. Don tells Bert he will handle it, but does not tell him that he did not sign the check.
The Don meets with Lane, who admits to embezzlement after trying to lie. Exhausted from anger, Lane insisted that he could not bear to be embarrassed to ask for a loan and never get compensated for his contribution to the agent; he also makes cynical comments about Don's wealth status, and generally tries to justify his cheating. Don has lost all confidence in Lane, though, and says that while he will cover $ 7,500, Lane should resign and give him a weekend to "think of an elegant way out." Lane then unpleasantly kisses Joan, makes lewd remarks at him, and seems very pleased when he responds with a silenced anger. After returning home after this meeting, Lane discovers that Rebecca, unaware of their financial situation, has bought her a new Jaguar (paid by check). Pryce puts her affairs in order and seeks to take her life through carbon monoxide poisoning; However, the effort failed when the Jaguar did not start. He then went to the SCDP, typed in a letter of resignation, and hung himself in his office. After finding his body, the partners also found a letter of resignation, and cut his body. Refusing to hold a memorial service, Rebecca has Lane's body sent to London for burial.
In the wake of Lane's suicide, the grieving partner loses. Joan, in particular, feels guilty for firing her after she leaves the meeting with the Don, and she confesses to Don that she feels responsible for her death. Then Don gives a $ 50,000 check to pay back the Lane's investment in the agency (although it is known elsewhere that the company actually receives more than that, $ 175,000, under an insurance policy prepared to pay if any partners die). In response, Rebecca claims that Lane is more valuable to the agency than $ 50,000 and accuses Don and the partner of filling "a man like that with ambition", leading to his suicide.
