Theft of service is a legal term for a crime committed when a person obtains a valuable service - as opposed to goods - by fraud, violence, threats or other unlawful means, ie, without the legitimate compensation of this service provider. It can also overlap with some type of fraud where payments are made on credit, but under assumed identity, and ultimately deny ("identity theft").

Such crimes are usually prosecuted as theft, and may be a minor crime or a crime, based on the value of services obtained illegally. This category covers a wide range of criminal activities including interference with (or passing through) a gauge so that actual consumption levels are underestimated, leaving a hotel or restaurant or similar establishment without paying for services and "jumping doors" or other methods of avoiding payment of fees or fees when using public transport vehicles or entering into private facilities usually requires payment (for example, jumping over a fence at a fair concert or state). Theft service also occurs in the taxi industry, when a passenger in a taxi escapes from a taxi to avoid paying a fee.
This kind of theft should not be confused with reasonable rejection, where, for example, the customer does not pay because the services provided are not as advertised or because the service does not meet reasonable quality standards. For example, if a roofer is installing a new roof, but the roof is leaking, the customer may be able to withhold payment until the leak is repaired. Cutting payments for no reason will be considered a theft.
This law also, sometimes, has been applied in the field of health care, when hospitals or other health care providers have pressed criminal charges against poor patients, who have no insurance that can not pay for their care. This scenario has sparked intense criticism, and is a major issue in calls for the massive improvement of health care systems in the United States.
