History
This township was originally formed on April 10, 1797, from the City of Saddle River and the City of Franklin in Bergen County, and was founded on 21 February 1798, as one of the early state groups of 104 municipalities.
On March 10, 1834, West Milford was created from parts of the township.
When Passaic County, New Jersey was founded on February 7, 1837, it included Pompton Township.
Borough Pompton Lakes, New Jersey was formed on February 26, 1895, during the height of the phenomenon "Boroughitis", as a second city separated from the township. The municipality was divided on February 23, 1918, into three areas: Bloomingdale, Ringwood, and Wanaque, with the rest being forwarded to Pompton Lakes. This put an end to the municipality.
According to news reports at the time of the split, local leaders from different communities felt that the growth of the population within the municipality was an obstacle to the ability of the Township Committee to govern. Residents of Haskell (now part of Wanaque) have begun discussing the formation of their own districts and this encourages citizens in other parts to follow in their footsteps. Most of the land is sparsely populated and a split from one community will leave a greater tax burden on those remaining.
A meeting was held on 12 January 1918, to discuss the pros and cons of municipal pemekaran. From that, a committee representing various parts was formed and finally three boroughs were agreed upon, boundaries set and finances settled (part of debt, asset distribution). In addition, the district school district is also divided into separate districts for each district. The vote to split is approved in all three parts in February.
The last Township Committee meeting took place on May 14, 1918, at Midvale to settle the cash disbursement in the three district treasury and pay off the remaining debts to the county.
Based on data from the 2010 US Census, the combined population of five municipalities was formed from Pompton City - Bloomingdale (7,656), Pompton Lakes (11,097), Ringwood (12.228), Wanaque (11,116) and West Milford (25,850). ) - is 67,947, which will make Pompton the 16th largest municipality in the state (and the fourth largest in Passaic County, not far behind Passaic) if it still exists today.
