Everest College is a college system in the United States, and with Wyotech, forming Zenith Education. Until 2015 the nonprofit college system in the United States and the province of Ontario in Canada, owned and operated by Corinthian Colleges, Inc. By 2015, Corinthian ceased operations and filed for bankruptcy. While most of Corinth's colleges are closed by early 2015, the Educational Credit Management Corporation (ECMC), a non-profit organization, takes over more than half of Corinthian Colleges campuses, including many Everest College campuses. In 2016, 19 Everest locations owned by ECMC remain in operation. At least 10 campuses are closed or in closing process in 2016.

Canadian branches are not purchased by ECMC and remain closed.

After significant downsizing, Everest graduates still express concern that their titles are worthless.

By 2016, Corinthian Colleges was forced to pay more than $ 1.1 billion to the State of California, partly to cheat thousands of students. The judge ordered $ 820 million in compensation for students and a $ 350 million civil penalty. According to California State Attorney General "For many years, Corinthians have taken advantage of the poor - now they have to pay. This assessment sends a clear message: There is a cost for such predatory behavior."

More than a thousand former Everest College students have been granted debt assistance by the US government because of Everest's business practices. Thousands more may get debt relief.

Accreditation

Accreditation for Everest College varies by country, state and region. The regionally accredited Everest College campus is Everest College Phoenix, Everest College Mesa and online courses taught through Everest College Phoenix. All other Everest College campuses are nationally accredited.

Generally, credit from national accredited institutions can not be transferred to other universities and universities.

In 2009 Everest College Phoenix was placed on a period of academic experimentation by the accreditation body for concerns that it lacked sufficient autonomy and control over academics on campus and operations of its holding company, Corinthian Colleges, Inc. In September 2010, the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools rejected the recommendation from its evaluation panel that school accreditation was directly lifted. In November 2010 the Higher Learning Commission decided to put the campus on a "Show-Cause" status that would require the College to show the commission why its accreditation should not be revoked. Everest College Phoenix has until March 2011 responded to the request and the problem was not expected to be completed until November 2011. The college remains an accredited institution during this period.

Legal process

In the United States

Everest is one of 15 nonprofit colleges cited by the Government Accountability Office for deceptive or questionable statements made for undercover masquerades as applicants. Two unnamed campuses are cited in this report. The Department of Education statistics show that the Everest College graduate has the highest default rate of any school in California for students entering payments in 2010 and the fifth highest rate in Arizona.

In September 2010, a group of Everest College graduates sued the school for fraud, accusing the deceptive hiring practices of attendance fees, degree values, and whether the credits earned there would be transferred to other schools.

In 2012, Everest College in Hayward, California issued a "Notice to Obey" by the California Bureau for Private Postecondary Education for multiple offenses, including engaging in "forbidden business practices".

In Canada

In 2014, Everest announced the sale of the 14 sites in Canada following a parent's investigation of placement concerns and the value of forged work. In February 2015, the Canadian National Careers College Association announced that the location of Ontario at Everest University had their operating licenses suspended by the Training Department, Colleges and Universities (Ontario).

On February 19, 2015, supervisors of private career college Ontario, independent regulators who set up schools like Everest and others in the province, said it has suspended the chain's license to operate in Ontario as a private college, effective immediately. Former students and teachers claim the campus is corrupt and scam. On February 20, 2015, Everest College Canada filed for Bankruptcy protection.

Corinthian debt cancellation

On June 8, 2015, the Department of Education announced that it is developing a process that will allow former Everest students (along with other Corinthian schools) to apply for debt relief if they believe they are victims of fraud. Although the Department has not yet created a formal process, they have outlined what borrowers should ask if they wish to pursue a debt cancellation on the Federal Student Aid website.

In addition, the advocacy group, Debt Collective, has created an unofficial "Defense to Repayment App" that allows former Corinthian students and other schools to be accused of fraud in pursuit of debt cancellation. Applications generated through the online form of Debt Collective are cited by the Ministry of Education in the Federal Register notification, which says that "the need for a clearer process for potential claimants" arose because of the submission of more than 1000 defenses for payment claims with "a debt activism movement.
