Charles Christian Porter (born July 11, 1970) is an Australian politician and lawyer currently serving as Turnbull Government Attorney General since 20 December 2017. He was elected a member of the Liberal Party for the Federal Division of Pearce in federal elections 2013.
From Perth, Porter attended Hale School, University of Western Australia and then London School of Economics, and practiced law at Clayton Utz and taught law at the University of Western Australia before his election to parliament. She is the son of Olympic silver medalist 1956, Charles "Chilla" Porter, and Liberal Queensland political grandson Charles Porter, who was a member of the Queensland Legislative Council from 1966 to 1980.
Before his election to the federal parliament, Porter had served in the Parliament of Western Australia. He first entered the Legislative Assembly after winning the seat of Murdoch in the 2008 election after the death of Sitting member Trevor Sprigg and he was elected to Bateman's new chair in the 2008 general election. After the Liberals formed a government, Porter was appointed Attorney-General in the ministry of Barnett. In December 2010, he was also appointed Treasurer, and held both portfolios until June 2012, when he resigned from the ministry for the 2013 federal election contest.
Prior to taking his current position, Porter is the Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister in Abbott's Government from December 2014 to September 2015, and then Minister of Social Services in Turnbull Government from September 2015 to December 2017.

Background and start of career
Porter's father was Charles "Chilla" Porter, who during the 1970s and 1980s was director of the Western Australian Liberal Party. His grandfather, Sir Charles Robert Porter, was a member of the Queensland Liberal parliament between 1966 and 1980 and served in the ministry of Joh Bjelke-Petersen.
Porter was educated at Hale School, then at the University of Western Australia where he graduated Bachelor of Economics and Bachelor of Arts with a first class honors in politics, before completing his Bachelor of Laws. Porter then studied at the London School of Economics for the Master of Science in political theory, from which he graduated in the upper classes with a difference.
Before entering Parliament, Porter worked as a predominant lawyer, starting as a commercial litigator in Clayton Utz before moving to public practice. He spent a year as an advisor to the Federal Minister for Justice and then began working for the Office of the Prosecutor General as senior state prosecutor. Before being elected in 2008, Porter worked as a lecturer at Western Australia University and retained, part-time, his position as senior prosecutor in the DPP.

In the 2008 election, Porter contested and won the newly created Bateman seat after the abolition of Murdoch's seat in the 2007 redistribution. He was appointed Attorney General and Minister of Corrective Services after the election, having held the equivalent shadow portfolio before the election.
On December 14, 2010, Porter was sworn in as Treasurer of Western Australia. He retained the Attorney General's portfolio, while the Corrective Services portfolio was transferred to Terry Redman.
On June 12, 2012, he announced he was withdrawing from the ministerial portfolio for the Pearce seat contest at the 2013 Australian federal election.

On September 20, 2015, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull announced that Porter would replace Scott Morrison as Minister of Social Services as part of a cabinet improvement.
In 2016, Centrelink, which operates under the supervision of Porter's senior as Minister of Social Affairs, becomes involved in a debt recovery controversy. Despite increased media interest and grievances, after meeting with the Human Services Department, Porter stated that the program works "very well". The program is then subject to a Senate committee investigation.
In December 2017 the Turnbull ministry reshuffle, Porter became the Attorney General to replace George Brandis. He submitted the Social Services portfolio to Dan Tehan.
