History
American InterContinental University (AIU) was founded in 1970 in Lucerne, Switzerland by American couples Jack and Helen Barnette of Atlanta, and was first known as the American Fashion College of Switzerland. The school was recognized as an American awarding institution in 1971, initially offering undergraduate and graduate degrees beginning in 1974. In 1976 a Swiss-based school opened a campus in Atlanta and, in 1978, the Lucerne campus moved to London and changed its name. to American College for Applied Arts.
In 1978, the school had about 300 students, and began expanding its offer out of fashion to areas such as business. The school opened several other campuses in the following years. Steve Bostic bought the school in 1996 and changed its name to American InterContinental University. In 2001, AIU was acquired by its current owner, Career Education Corporation, which is a publicly traded nonprofit school operator.
The branch campuses were established as follows:
o Atlanta - Buckhead, Georgia campus 1976

Funding
AIU receives about 96% of all funds from the US government, including about $ 29 million from GI Bill funds. It has been demanded to deceive the federal government by taking federal funds while providing sub-standard education.
Campus
AIU currently has two campuses in the United States.
- Atlanta, Georgia (located at 6600 Peachtree-Dunwoody Rd. in Sandy Springs)
Following the June 2009 consolidation of AIU Buckhead and AIU Dunwoody campuses to AIU Atlanta, the new campus underwent significant renovations. The AIU Atlanta campus now has an industrial forensics laboratory today; virtual fire weapon training laboratory (FATS); drawing studio; laboratory of mathematics, science and special writing; and a new redesigned studio for fashion design, media production, visual communication and interior design.
- Houston, Texas (located at 9999 Richmond Ave., in Westchase district)
The AIU Houston building was heavily damaged by Hurricane Ike in September 2008. It was renovated, and a major re-opening celebration took place in February 2009.
Online campus
The online program began in 2001 but was recognized as a separate campus in 2002. John Kline currently serves as president of AIU Online, now considered the premier campus for AIU. The online campus office is located in Schaumburg, Illinois, a northwest suburb of Chicago.
Former campus
- London, England (located at 110 Marylebone High St.). London AIU became part of Regent's University London in April 2013.
- Los Angeles, California (formerly located at 12655 W. Jefferson Blvd.)
- Dubai, United Arab Emirates (known as American University in Dubai since 2007)
On February 18, 2008, American InterContinental University announced plans to gradually close its campus in Los Angeles. Dr. George Miller, president of American InterContinental University, cited the low enrollment of students on the Los Angeles campus as the reason for this decision.
Accreditation
In 2009, AIU successfully sought accreditation to switch from SACS to the High Learning Commission (HLC) from the Association of Colleges and North High Schools (NCAs). School officials feel this is the best because most students are served through an Internet-based campus based in the geographic area of ââHLC. SACS and HLC are one of six regional accrediting organizations recognized by the US Department of Education.
The US Department of Education, Office of the Inspector General, questioned the High Learning Commission's decision to approve AIU accreditation based on standard commission checks to measure credit hours and program lengths. An assistant inspector general stated in the report, "This action by HLC is not in the best interests of the students, and question whether accreditation decisions made by HLC should be relied upon by the Ministry of Education when assisting students to obtain quality education through the Title IV program." -HLC Sylvia Manning responds that the accusation is "fragile" because it focuses on a single accreditation issue involving one school. SACS President Belle Wheelan sided with the NCA-HLC, calling the OIG report "frightening" and stressed that American InterContinental University's accreditation under SACS has been "in good standing."
In addition to HLC, the University's business program earned accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Schools and Business Programs in 2011.
In 2013, AIU's Master of Education (M.Ed.) program became one of the first fully online programs to be granted an initial two year accreditation by the Teacher Education Accreditation Council (TEAC).
AIU London is accredited by the UK Accreditation Council for Advanced Education and Higher Education until it is absorbed by Regent's College London in April 2013. In June 2008, the Quality Assurance Agency closed an audit published in May 2005 based on an inspection of London. Campus in 2004. The report has noted that on the Agency's review date in 2004, there was "a fundamental concern about the academic standards achieved." After a successful effort on the London campus to correct the flaws, QAA noted that, "Since QAA audits have been given information indicating that appropriate action has been taken by American InterContinental University in response to the findings of this report, the audit results were signed in June 2008."
Academics
AIU offers Associate, Bachelor and Master degree in various fields. Many instructors are professionals in their field and utilize their real experiences to enrich classroom teaching and career training. AIU offers classroom instruction directly on campus land and online through Virtual Campus, or a combination of both. AIU Virtual Campus provides students access to online learning materials as well as almost all traditional campus facilities, such as libraries, career services, student clubs, and financial aid information. Virtual Campus was named "Best of the Best" by Computerworld Honors Program in 2009.
According to the National Center for Education Statistics, AIU online has a 6% pass rate of 36%.
In 2009, My Unique Student Experience (M.U.S.E.) was introduced to a number of courses to complement out-of-class learning. CONTEMPLATING. is a web-based tool that provides access to additional, interactive learning options that help students understand the subject matter in ways that appeal to them. The Association of Private Colleges and Universities (APSCU), formerly the College of Career Associations, recognizes AIU's parent company, Career Education Corporation ("CEC"), for M.U.S.E. with the 2010 CCA Innovation Award.
In 2013, AIU launched an exclusive adaptive learning technology called intellipath (TM) to generate data-tailored learning. The platform assesses students' current understanding of a topic and then adjusts the types and sequences of lessons presented to meet their individual needs.
In April 2014, AIU introduced intellipath to the MBA in Management, making the first AIU MBA program in the US driven by adaptive learning technologies.
Ratings
American InterContinental University ranked # 8 on an analysis of the Internal Education Department obtained by the Center for Investigative Reporting which showed 133 nonprofit colleges relying heavily on taxpayer money that they would violate legislation designed to prevent profiteering without loopholes that do not include the GI Bill Assistance for active military duty, with more than 96% of the revenue coming from this taxpayer financed program.
Registration policy
AIU has an open enrollment policy and, in the past, critics have researched university student recruitment practices. An anonymous professor told The Chronicle of Higher Education: "If you can breathe and walk, you can go to school." In July 2008, a former employee filed a lawsuit alleging that the admissions practices of schools were deceived by federal grants and loans. The lawsuit against registration practices was dismissed in 2012.

Investigation and controversy
The parent company of AIU, Career Education Corporation has been investigated by the US Department of Justice and Education as well as the Securities and Exchange Commission. Special allegations for the AIU include reports that the Los Angeles campus misinterpreted the program and its class, making it a practice to acknowledge students who did not graduate from high school, and included in the number of students who had never attended the class. The CEC representative stated in July 2007 that the problem on the AIU campus of Los Angeles "has been overcome and has largely been resolved."
One of the most outspoken critics of AIU and CEC was the founder of AIU, Steve Bostic, accused in 2005 that "the CECO Board has allowed management to forget the Company's primary mission in providing quality educational services; under this director CECO's management has sacrificed quality student programs, resulting in a severe escalation of student attrition - all for the sake of an untenable 'top-line growth strategy'. "
On June 21, 2005, the US Department of Education suspended approval of new CEC applications for additional campus or acquisitions while reviewing corporate financial records and compliance with federal student assistance regulations. This restriction was lifted in January 2007.
In 2009, AIU whisteblowers alleged that AIU enrolled students who were illiterate and did not have a secondary school degree.
In 2014, media sources reported that an American Intercontinental student spent $ 73,000 in debt.
American Intercontinental University is currently undergoing improved cash oversight by the US Department of Education "to provide additional oversight of cash management."
